The composer's identity is uncertain. Stevenson considers that he could be a 'Iohannes Illarius' mentioned as an authority by theorist Cristóbal de Escobar (Introducción muy breve de canto llano, published in Salamanca in the 1490s). Dean dissociates him from the three French composers that could correspond to the name 'Hylaire'. According to Knighton, the existence of two pieces by Illario in E-TZ 2/3 and E-Bbc M. 454 could indicate some links to the Aragonese royal chapel.
