He was recorded as a singer at Seville Cathedral in 1497, obtaining a full cantoria before 1505. He is also recorded as a teacher of Latin and Greek at the Sevillian Colegio de San Miguel. In 1514 he became chapelmaster at Seville Cathedral, and, from 1551 until his death in 1574, he was aided in his duties by Francisco Guerrero.

His extremely long life and the common occurrence of the surname 'Fernández' in Spain (with the added 'de Castilleja' appearing only once) advise caution, and open the possibility that the earlier records refer to more than one person.
